March 9, 2021

Clinical Translational Sciences Ph.D. student Tabitha Green was awarded the 2021 BIO5 Innovator Award at the 2021 Graduate and Professional Student Council Student Showcase, an annual event highlighting the excellent research being conducted by students across the University.  The BIO5 Innovator Award recognizes one graduate and one undergraduate student whose work best represents the goals of the BIO5 Institute. Ms. Green presented her research examining the role of inflammation and microglia (the resident immune cells of the brain) in sleep, detailing methods on how to quantitatively assess microglia morphology and use it as an indicator of inflammatory status. She was judged on scientific content, clarity of speaking, innovation, contribution to the field, and collaboration.

Dr. Rachel Rowe (Research Assistant Professor, Child Health), who is Ms. Green’s faculty mentor in the Ph.D. program, states:  “The University of Arizona Graduate and Professional Student Council hosted a student showcase for all undergraduate and graduate students, campus-wide. Tabitha presented her data as a representative of the CTS Program and the Translational Neurotrauma Research Program and was awarded the merit-based BIO5 Innovator Award.  We are proud of her accomplishments and are invested in her success as she continues to be a research ambassador for our programs.”
