Valerie Schaibley, PhD
Dr. Schaibley the Associate Director and the Research Director of the Genetic Counseling Graduate Program at the University of Arizona and is an Assistant Professor in the Educator Scholar track in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. Since 2016, Dr. Schaibley has worked as part of the leadership team of the GCGP to develop the new master’s degree program in genetic counseling at UA, which started in the fall of 2019. Dr. Schaibley works with the GCGP program leadership to oversee the program, teaches classes in human genetics and genetic testing and oversees the research program for the GCGP. Dr. Schaibley received her PhD in Human Genetics from the University of Michigan, studying patterns of mutation in the human genome using rare variant data obtained from high-throughput sequencing. She has extensive experience in scientific communications, project management, and precision medicine. Prior to joining UA, she worked in a precision medicine start-up company contributing to genetic testing product development, physician and patient-oriented genetic test reports, bioinformatic and data analysis pipelines, and scientific communication strategies
