Clinical Translational Sciences MD/PhD Program
Program Description
The MD/PhD Dual Degree Program in Clinical Translational Sciences prepares students for academic careers involving research and teaching, as well as other research careers (biotechnology, government laboratories, industry, and health-related organizations). The program is available to qualified medical students at the College of Medicine – Tucson and the College of Medicine – Phoenix.
The specific program of study, including coursework, is designed jointly by the student, the college and the CTS graduate program. Typically, seven to eight years are required for completion of the MD and PhD degrees; the first two years at medical school, followed by completion of graduate coursework and dissertation research, and then by completion of the clinical medical school requirements.
Students apply to the MD/PhD program either upon initial application to the College of Medicine – Tucson or the College of Medicine – Phoenix or as students in their first year of medical study. All applications for the U of A College of Medicine – Tucson and the College of Medicine – Phoenix MD/PhD program are reviewed and considered through the American Medical College Application Service. Each MD/PhD candidate is expected to have a letter of recommendation that collaborates service with a physician and/or clinical experience. Applicants to the program should possess clinical experiences that demonstrate a solid understanding of the clinical aspect of the MD/PhD program.
